Apple Introduces 'Apple Reference Image' to Prove iPhone Photos' Authenticity, Countering AI Edits
The feature, announced Wednesday during its Surprise and Shine event, is initially available for iPhone 18 Pro. It works by capturing signed sensor data from the main camera, which Apple's Private Cloud Compute service then converts into an unalterable reference image viewable in the Photos app. This reference image can be compared with other versions to detect any alterations. Apple will also provide APIs for developers and support the SynthID standard to aid in AI image detection.
