Pakistan warns Mecca defence pact could be activated if Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia continue
Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated on Tuesday night that any unprovoked aggression or spillover from Yemen into Saudi Arabia would activate the recently signed Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. The pact, signed last month by leaders from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Pakistan, commits to collective deterrence against aggression, mirroring a NATO stipulation where a strike on one member is considered a strike on the entire group. The warning follows Houthi rebels' attacks in southern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, which Riyadh reported wounded at least 73 people.
