A group of researchers, including Theta Labs CTO Jieyi Long and others from various crypto projects and academic institutions, has cut the estimated resources needed for a key operation in a potential quantum attack on Bitcoin and Ethereum. Their circuit requires 1,151 logical qubits and 1.30 million Toffoli gates, resulting in a combined score of 1.496 billion, which is less than half Google's previously reported benchmark. This development comes as both Bitcoin and Ethereum developers work on preparations for a potential future quantum threat, with some experts stressing the urgency of developing remedies that take years to implement.
