On Friday, Brent crude briefly climbed to nearly $110/barrel during U.S. trading hours, and WTI crude further rose to $103.05/barrel, both reaching their highest settlement prices since May 19 this year. Simultaneously, the U.S. August Producer Price Index (PPI) increased by 0.4% month-over-month and 5.4% year-over-year, marking the largest single-month increase since May this year. Impacted by this, market expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike intensified, with the interest rate swap market pricing in an approximately 70% probability of a Fed hike next week.
Asian markets experienced a sell-off in both stocks and bonds. Asia-Pacific equities fell across the board in early trading, with the MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropping 1.3%. Among them, the Nikkei 225 index's decline widened to 3% at one point, and the Kospi index fell 2.7%. The bond market also faced pressure, with Japan's 10-year government bond yield rising 5.8 basis points to 2.981% and the 20-year yield increasing 5.5 basis points to 3.805%. Australia's three-year government bond yield jumped by as much as 20 basis points in a single day to 5.05%, reaching a multi-year high.
Earlier on Thursday, the first expanded U.S. Treasury buyback operation, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, was smaller than investor expectations, causing the U.S. Treasury yield curve to rise across the board. The U.S. 10-year government bond yield touched 4.97%, its highest level since October 2023. European Central Bank President Lagarde also sent hawkish signals, stating that inflation risks in the Eurozone would persist until 2027. The market is currently focused on the U.S. August CPI data, which will be released on Friday.
Soaring oil prices and inflationary pressures have led to a sell-off in both equities and bonds across Asia: the Nikkei 225 index plunged 3%, the KOSPI index fell 2.7%, and Japan's 10-year government bond yield rose to 2.981%.
