Indian fintech companies, after conquering the payments market, are now shifting their focus to the credit market, which is more than twice the size of the payments market.
Following the successful popularization of digital payments in India, fintech companies are now setting their sights on the country's underserved credit market. Industry leaders stated at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai that the credit market is "more than double" the size of the payments market, with only 15% of Indian adults having access to formal credit. Among these companies, BharatPe launched its pre-approved credit product, BharatPe Flex, on Thursday, offering credit lines of up to 60,000 rupees. Indian Prime Minister Modi also urged fintech companies on Tuesday to increase their share of "non-payment transactions." Amazon Pay also plans to expand its "frictionless consumer credit" services.
