Nick Timiraos retweeted a post, responding to Donald Trump's view that the Federal Reserve should remain independent and not raise interest rates before the election. Trump, through Kevin Hassett, stated that there is no reason to raise rates now and that it is important for the Fed not to intervene before the election to maintain its independence. Timiraos, however, pointed out that Alan Greenspan had raised interest rates a week before the 1988 Republican National Convention. Furthermore, the Fed under Greenspan also cut rates in the second half of 1990 and 1992, and raised rates in the second half of 1994 and 2004.
