European Central Bank (ECB) Executive Board member Piero Cipollone emphasized that euro cash is crucial for Europe's monetary future, even in an increasingly digital age, citing its role in providing stability, trust, financial inclusion, privacy, and resilience during disruptions. He noted that over €1.6 trillion in euro banknotes are in circulation, growing annually by about 3%. The ECB is modernizing banknotes to integrate cutting-edge security features and improve sustainability. Additionally, the EU is strengthening the legal tender status of euro banknotes and coins through proposed regulations, aiming to ensure mandatory acceptance and convenient access to cash.
