EU member states agree to boost Arctic investment in response to Russian threats and geopolitical competition
Twelve EU member states unanimously agreed at a meeting on Monday that the Arctic has become a "geopolitical hotspot," calling for the EU to play a more strategic and proactive role in the region. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that Russia poses the most significant and long-term threat to Arctic security, and the EU must view the Arctic as a strategic frontier. The meeting also mentioned the ambitions of China and the United States in the region. Additionally, the EU last week signed an agreement with Greenland, which is under Danish jurisdiction, pledging to strengthen their partnership and provide €200 million (approximately $232 million) in investment to alleviate concerns sparked by former US President Donald Trump's repeated threats to annex the autonomous territory.
