He welcomed Donald Trump's statement on Saturday that an agreement could come "fairly quickly" and emphasized that Canada is ready to sit down and reach an agreement that respects both countries' sovereignty and Canadian cultural institutions. Following the breakdown of talks, the US imposed a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, to which Canada immediately responded with equivalent countermeasures.
