Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Beijing on Wednesday that China is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Iran to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. Wang encouraged Iran and the US to remain rational and restrained, and urged all parties to take effective measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz soon. He added that the current situation highlights the inadequacy of the existing Middle East security architecture, which needs reform and strengthening. The meeting comes a week before Chinese President Xi Jinping's planned trip to the US to meet Donald Trump, where the war on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz situation are expected to be discussed.
