Protos reports that Amazon's $190 billion investment in AI company Anthropic, as disclosed on its balance sheet, has historical ties to Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), founder of the now-bankrupt crypto exchange FTX. The report notes that SBF used FTX customer funds to purchase $500 million worth of equity in Anthropic in April 2022. He also donated $1.25 million in July 2022 to the predecessor of METR, Anthropic's safety evaluation organization, a donation that was returned in 2024. Amazon disclosed its equity stake in Anthropic in its Q2 10-Q filing, which includes approximately $98 billion in convertible notes and approximately $92 billion in non-voting preferred stock.
