A new survey by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation found that 81% of respondents in competitive Senate race states are more likely to vote for candidates with plans to avoid automatic Social Security benefit cuts than for those who promise not to touch the program. This comes as Social Security's retirement trust fund is projected to run dry in the fourth quarter of 2032, potentially leading to a 22% cut in benefits without congressional action. The survey, conducted between August 20 and August 27, also showed that awareness of the looming funding shortfall is growing, with support for reforms rising to 91% after voters were informed about the projected cuts.
