AI data center demand surges, with planned long-duration energy storage projects in the US increasing more than fivefold since early 2025. Tech giants like Meta and Google are making massive bets.
According to Bloomberg, since early 2025, long-duration energy storage projects in the US that have been announced, approved, or completed financing have reached at least 150 GWh, a more than fivefold increase from the nation's total planned installed capacity at the end of 2024. Most of this new demand comes from AI data centers. Tech giants such as Meta and Google are driving the development of long-duration energy storage technologies, which were previously costly and slow to commercialize, through large-scale procurement and project collaborations. For example, Google is working with Italy's Energy Dome to deploy a CO2 energy storage system capable of storing energy for 10 hours; Meta has signed an agreement with California's Noon Energy to install a system capable of storing energy for up to 100 hours.
