The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Monday suspended flights at several major airports on the U.S. East Coast, including New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport, due to equipment failure, resulting in over 1,000 flight delays or cancellations. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy stated on social media platform X that the flight suspension was caused by an accidental severing of a fiber optic line in New Jersey by an Amtrak construction crew, leading to a telecommunications outage. This disruption affected the arrival of multiple world leaders in New York during the United Nations General Assembly. As of 3 p.m. ET on Monday, 31% of outbound flights and 29% of inbound flights at Newark Airport were canceled, with an additional 17% of flights delayed. FAA Administrator Brian Bedford stated that repairs could take up to 13 hours.
