Ben Thompson, a technology strategy analyst, states the AI industry faces five "excesses," with model capabilities already being in surplus. Now is the "application moment."
In his latest article, "Frontier Overhangs," Thompson points out that the AI industry is facing a "fivefold overhang" in capabilities, products, pricing, capital, and safety. This indicates that absolute leadership in model capabilities is no longer a sufficient condition for building a commercial moat. He believes that models and application layers are moving towards modular separation, and products like Meta's Muse demonstrate that non-top-tier models can also build products with strong user stickiness. Thompson also questions Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to "slow down frontier AI," arguing that his safety-driven discourse aligns closely with the commercial difficulties faced by frontier labs.
