Hong Kong and mainland stocks inch up ahead of Xi-Trump summit; US Treasury Secretary Bessent confirms future AI safety talks
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.2% to 25,087, with Alibaba Group hitting a one-month high after CEO Eddie Wu announced a target for cloud global data centre capacity to exceed 20 GW by 2032. Tencent Holdings also jumped on its latest AI image-generation model preview. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.06% to 3,952. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Monday that senior Chinese and US officials will meet again in about two months in Shenzhen to discuss AI dangers and communications protocols. Bessent also made positive comments on Sino-US trade relations ahead of President Xi Jinping's state visit to the US from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of President Donald Trump. BNP Paribas' William Bratton noted limited expectations for the state visit, focusing more on optics and symbolism.
