MicroStrategy has repurchased 5,553 Bitcoins in recent weeks, which it had sold earlier this summer. The company sold at a low price in the summer and repurchased at a high price in the autumn, incurring an opportunity cost of over $100 million for this round-trip trade. MicroStrategy reportedly sold 6,948 Bitcoins between May and August at an average price of $62,150 per coin, and subsequently repurchased 5,553 Bitcoins at an average price of $80,207 per coin. This means MicroStrategy ultimately holds the same 5,553 Bitcoins as it did initially, but paid an additional $100.2 million for them, forfeiting investment gains that could have been realized during Bitcoin's price increase. The company's CEO, Michael Saylor, had stated that the sale of Bitcoin was to "vaccinate the market" and send a message, rather than due to a cash shortage. MicroStrategy first repurchased 4,603 Bitcoins in the week ending August 30, costing $369.7 million, funded by newly issued shares. Last week, the company repurchased another 950 Bitcoins using cash. Currently, MicroStrategy still has 1,363 Bitcoins yet to be repurchased, which would cost an additional $100 million at current prices.
