According to CNBC, a federal civil lawsuit has been filed against former U.S. President Donald Trump and his family's crypto company, World Liberty Financial, alleging that they illegally profited over $2 billion through digital currency transactions with foreign entities. The lawsuit claims these transactions violated the U.S. Constitution's emoluments clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting foreign funds.
The lawsuit was filed on Thursday in a Washington federal district court by a shareholder of U.S. crypto company Circle Internet Group, accusing World Liberty Financial of two "illegal foreign emoluments" transactions with Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's national security advisor. These include a Tahnoon-backed entity acquiring a 49% stake in World Liberty for $500 million in January 2025, and an Abu Dhabi investment fund chaired by Tahnoon "inflating the value of Trump's crypto assets" by purchasing $2 billion of World Liberty's stablecoin, USD1.
A spokesperson for World Liberty Financial denied the allegations, stating that the company complies with all U.S. laws and regulations and looks forward to resolving the matter in court. Circle stated it did not initiate, direct, or participate in the lawsuit.
