Microsoft security researchers stated that a China-linked hacking group breached IT management and remote access giant ConnectWise's cloud backup service, stealing application credentials used to establish data links between ConnectWise and its enterprise clients. The hackers used these credentials to log into clients' Microsoft-hosted environments, accessing their emails and other files. According to Microsoft, the hackers used AI agents, including the open-source AI framework ARTEX, to rapidly compromise approximately 2,250 organizations at a login attempt rate of nearly 3,000 per minute. ConnectWise has suspended access to its cloud backup service and is investigating the breach.
