Goldman Sachs traders Matthew Kaplan reported, as cited by Wall Street News, that Thursday's divergence between market breadth and index performance in U.S. equities was the largest since the 1990s. The S&P 500 fell 1.5% while two-thirds of its components closed higher, and the Nasdaq 100 plunged over 3%. Goldman Sachs' GSTHVIPP index, which tracks hedge fund long-short performance, dropped approximately 4.2% on the day, marking its largest single-day decline since August 2011 when the U.S. lost its AAA rating. Its cumulative monthly decline has now expanded to 10.4%.
