The copyright holders of Elvis Presley's song catalog, including music publishers, filed a lawsuit on October 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing Anthropic PBC of using Presley's lyrics without permission to train its Claude chatbot. The complaint alleges that Anthropic infringed the plaintiffs' copyrights, bypassed digital access control measures, and removed copyright management information from approximately 274 protected works. The plaintiffs are seeking up to $48.6 million in damages under the Copyright Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
