Seoul police announced the arrest of seven suspects accused of using generative AI tools to breach approximately 90 hospitals, schools, and companies, stealing 8.2 million records and extorting around $270,000 from victims. Police stated this is South Korea's first large-scale AI-assisted hacking case. The alleged mastermind, a 32-year-old art and sports major with no IT background, reportedly self-taught and used AI coding agents and autonomous penetration testing systems to carry out the 13-month attack campaign (September 2025 to October 2026). Police noted that attacks of this scale previously required a hacking group, but AI enabled a single individual to achieve it in a short period.
