The United States, the European Union, and 30 other countries issued a joint statement on Monday, warning of a "deeply concerning deterioration" in Sudan's food security situation and calling for "urgent action" to prevent famine in the African nation. The statement urged all parties to the conflict in Sudan to "remove all impediments to humanitarian access" and called on the international community to urgently increase funding to meet the growing needs. It noted that without immediate action, the number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition could exceed the projected 825,000.
