Japan's GMO Internet is verifying alleged customer data posted by suspected hackers following a cloud service breach
Japan's GMO Internet is verifying alleged customer data posted by suspected hackers following a cloud service breach, after refusing a $50 million ransom demand. The internet giant discovered unauthorized access to its Onamae cloud desktop service on October 21 and received an email from hackers demanding approximately 8 billion yen (~$50 million). The company has since advised customers to reset their passwords amid reports of unauthorized operations on trading accounts, with up to 27,000 servers potentially affected. GMO Internet reported the incident to Japanese police on October 22 and stated on October 27 that it is still checking whether the posted information is genuine.
