The US Federal Election Commission (FEC) announced that a "bad actor" attempted to breach its systems, forcing a temporary suspension of web-facing services. This outage has disrupted the filing of 24 and 48-hour spending reports, which track political groups' and candidates' expenditures, just days before the November 3 midterm elections. FEC Commissioner Dara Lindenbaum clarified that the incident affects only federal campaign finance findings and has "NOTHING to do with voter files or voter registration." The current midterm elections are the most expensive in US history, with approximately $11.21 billion spent on advertising.
