Bitcoin Core developer Cory Fields has proposed a mechanism utilizing staking and auctions to prevent quantum theft. According to the proposed framework, spending legacy Bitcoin after quantum attacks become viable would require an equivalent amount of Bitcoin as collateral. Specifically, the "quantum landmine" mechanism would allow owners who establish cryptographic proofs in advance to protect their funds and claim the attacker's collateral, while the auction mechanism aims to introduce financial risk for attackers by allowing third parties to compete for the attacker's collateral even if the original private key is considered lost. Fields emphasized that these mechanisms are still in the conceptual stage, with specific implementation details yet to be developed.
