The Ethereum execution client Reth has exposed a state root calculation vulnerability, prompting Layer 2 networks such as Optimism and Base to release emergency patches. Georgios Konstantopoulos, CTO of crypto investment firm Paradigm, stated that developers have released fix patches addressing the vulnerability, which impacts Reth, Optimism, Base, and Tempo. The bug stems from Reth's legacy state root calculation system potentially returning incorrect results when processing specific smart contract storage configurations, affecting networks built using the OP Stack and others. Development teams for Base and Tempo confirmed they have fixed related issues for block builders and verified that current state roots are correct, with no user funds reported compromised. Meanwhile, cross-layer protocols including LayerZero have taken precautionary measures by temporarily pausing certain transfer routes.
