Goldman Sachs partner Mark Wilson noted that after a strong rally in Q2, the US stock market has entered a sideways trend, currently facing three major headwinds: historical patterns around midterm elections, fully long positions by quantitative funds, and a "triangle chokehold" from energy, bonds, and equities. He is bullish on four investment themes: AI infrastructure leaders, commodities and related stocks (especially copper), German equities, and large banks.

Wilson believes that historical data for midterm elections shows a median return of 0% for US equities from early August until the election, and the market has been trading according to this pattern. Quantitative trend-following funds and volatility-targeting strategies remain near fully long, facing selling pressure if prices decline. Geopolitical factors are pushing up oil and gas prices, which in turn drives bond yields higher, ultimately suppressing equity valuations, forming the "energy-bond-equity" triangle chokehold, which is the core contradiction in the current market.

Among the four favored themes, Wilson sees continuously strengthening fundamentals in AI infrastructure, with tech giants accelerating capital expenditures. However, he suggests waiting for yields to stop climbing and for the market to look ahead to 2028. In commodities, he is particularly bullish on copper, noting its strong trading performance and the fact that related stocks have not yet been re-rated. German equities are attractive because their index composition has shifted towards defense, electrification, AI, and technology, and pension reforms could turn German savers into buyers. Large banks are benefiting from sustained growth in capital markets fee income and AI-related financing demand, as well as potential easing of the regulatory environment.

According to The Information on September 13, three NVIDIA customers each contributed over 10% of total revenue in the first half of the current fiscal year, which ended in July, with their combined share reaching 44%. In the previous fiscal year, two customers accounted for 36%.

The increase in customer concentration comes amid the explosive growth of NVIDIA's data center business. NVIDIA did not name these three customers, but analysts believe they may include Dell, Foxconn Technology, Microsoft, Meta, and SpaceX, among others. These large customers are also advancing their own AI chip development plans, which could lead to a decrease in future procurement demand.

Additionally, NVIDIA disclosed in late August that its accounts receivable balance jumped 64% to $63 billion in the first half of the year. This was due to the company extending payment terms for large, multi-quarter agreements with some investment-grade major customers, from 45 days in the previous quarter to 60 days, with potential further extensions to 90 days or up to a year in the future. Short-seller Michael Burry has listed NVIDIA's rising customer concentration as one of the significant risks.

Baker Hughes Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli stated that the company has not observed a slowdown in major energy project investments, attributing this to strong demand for natural gas and power driven by the global expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. He emphasized that natural gas is a "destination fuel" rather than a transition fuel, central to the current "energy demand decade." The company estimates that installed LNG capacity will need to reach 900 million tons per annum by 2035 to meet future demand. Baker Hughes currently has over $37 billion in backlog, including demand related to gas infrastructure, data center power generation, and LNG.

Wall Street Insights quoted Politico as reporting that Democrats are expected to pressure the administration to establish stricter environmental and regulatory safeguards and require data centers to bear the costs of grid upgrades. Some Democrats, such as Rep. Frank Pallone, even support a moratorium on new data center construction in the absence of such safeguards. Relevant legislation, such as the Ratepayer Protection Act (H.R. 9340), has passed a House committee, and data center operators need to closely monitor the impact of election results on the legislative direction.

Wall Street News, citing Politico, reported that growing electricity demand is pushing Democrats to support expanding nuclear power capacity. However, the Trump administration's reforms to the NRC's independence, including the removal of Democratic commissioners and the issuance of licenses for non-commercial reactors through the Department of Energy and Department of Defense, have drawn strong criticism from Democrats. Rep. Frank Pallone, who is expected to chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has publicly stated that once Democrats control the House, congressional hearings on the NRC's regulatory framework will be on the agenda, potentially disrupting the pace of licensing approvals for the nuclear energy industry.

Wall Street Journal Insights, citing Politico, reported that the Trump administration recently brokered a deal involving 17 Venezuelan oil fields with proven reserves of up to 65 billion barrels. The U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital will hold a 35% stake and a right of first refusal in the private oil producer North American Blue Energy Partners. Democrats have strongly reacted to this, with Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz pledging to help block the agreement's advancement and initiate a congressional investigation if elected.

On September 14, Nadella posted on X, explicitly supporting "consciously controlling the pace of R&D" to advance alignment research, and emphasizing that the pursuit of superintelligence must be centered on the core principle that "AI can help and be controlled by humans." He pointed out that the benefits of AI must be widely distributed and not controlled by a few entities. This move by Microsoft marks the first time it has publicly documented the behavioral standards for its first-party AI models. Previously, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google had been discussing collaborating to form an AI industry standards body, a move supported by OpenAI CEO Altman.

Chinese A-share cybersecurity concept stocks opened significantly higher in early trading, with Sinovatech hitting its third consecutive daily limit, Topsec Security reaching the daily limit with a one-word board, and Yongxin Zhicheng and Anheng Information rising over 10%. In terms of news, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, stated in a blog post that the AI industry needs to slow down the development of new models to allow sufficient time for aligning models with human goals and implementing safety measures.

Anthropic has signed a six-year, $13.7 billion computing power lease agreement with emerging U.S. cloud service provider Rum Group, The Information reported, citing sources. Rum Group, formerly conservative video platform Rumble, counts Peter Thiel and current U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance among its early investors. The platform also hosts Donald Trump's Truth Social and official White House live streams, leading media to often refer to it as a "Trump-affiliated" company. The agreement also includes an equity arrangement, granting Anthropic an option to purchase up to 51 million shares of Rum Group at $0.01 per share, with exercise conditions tied to the volume of computing power purchased. Rum Group's Georgia data center, central to the agreement, is still under construction, and the company stated in an August securities filing that it "does not yet have the funds" to complete the project, expecting to cover most expenses through additional debt or equity financing.

Former President Trump stated on Sunday that the U.S. could continue its campaign against Iran and take control of its oil, likening it to the deal with Venezuela. He added that U.S. revenue from the Venezuela arrangement, which granted access to roughly a fifth of Venezuela's oil reserves, has "paid for the war many times." His comments came as diplomacy over the Strait of Hormuz stalled, with a meeting between Gulf countries and Iran postponed due to a need for consensus.

Moreno emphasized, "The Clarity Act will enhance law enforcement's ability to combat illicit activities and has garnered support from national law enforcement groups. He stated that the bill contains the strictest ethics provisions in US congressional history, bringing the President and Vice President under regulation for the first time; if the bill is not passed, any elected official will be unrestrained."

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix rejected a proposal from Korea Electric Power Corp. to prepay a combined 25 trillion won ($18.4 billion) in electricity bills for the next five years. The chipmakers informed the state-run utility of their decision after internal reviews found that committing such a large amount of cash upfront would be difficult to justify amid uncertainty over the longer-term semiconductor cycle, industry sources said Monday.

Bank of America's Chief Investment Strategist, Michael Hartnett, noted in his latest "Flow Show" report that record diesel prices, the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield surging to its highest level since 2007, and productivity concerns amid the AI boom are collectively creating stagflation risks for the autumn. He identified the Transportation ETF (IYT) as a key indicator to watch, stating that a break below its 200-day moving average support at 80 points would confirm a stagflation scenario. Hartnett emphasized that the diesel crack spread has hit a record $102 per barrel, with retail prices reaching $6 per gallon, representing the core pressure point for the real economy. Fund flow data shows that over the past three weeks, average weekly net inflows into U.S. equities were only $7 billion, a significant contraction from July, with U.S. stocks recording a net outflow of $14.2 billion. During the same period, global bonds attracted $17.5 billion, and cryptocurrencies saw inflows of $1.3 billion, with cumulative net inflows of $6.8 billion over the past six weeks.

The failed mutiny on August 29, which involved soldiers attacking an airbase, the presidential palace, and the national broadcaster, revealed President Abdourahamane Tiani's increased dependence on Russian support, including from the Russian Africa Corps, to counter threats from within his own security forces. The incident also highlighted internal grievances within the Nigerien army, stemming from significant casualties among front-line soldiers and discrepancies in deployment and remuneration compared to senior officers. Furthermore, the mutiny tested the cohesion and operational capabilities of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), as fellow member states Mali and Burkina Faso remained largely unreactive until the rebellion was neutralized.
