USDT Overview

USDT (USDT) is a crypto stablecoin launched by Tether Limited in 2014. Its core objective is to maintain a 1:1 value peg with the US dollar, providing price stability to the cryptocurrency market. Tether Limited is a subsidiary of iFinex Inc., which also owns the well-known Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange.

Operational Mechanism and Reserve Assets

The stability of USDT stems from Tether's claimed backing by equivalent reserve assets. These reserves primarily consist of US Treasury bills, with additional Bitcoin, gold, and other assets held as excess reserves. The supply of USDT is not fixed; instead, Tether dynamically adjusts it based on market demand through "minting" (issuing new tokens) and "burning" (reclaiming and destroying tokens) mechanisms.

To enhance transparency, international auditing firm BDO issues quarterly attestation reports confirming that the total reserves are equal to or greater than the USDT in circulation. The report as of May 3, 2026, indicated sufficient reserves.

Multi-chain Deployment and Ecosystem Applications

USDT has been widely deployed on multiple mainstream blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Tron, Solana, and Polygon, which significantly enhances its liquidity and application scope. USDT plays multiple roles in the crypto ecosystem:

  • Cryptocurrency Trading: As a unit of account for transactions and a temporary store of funds, it facilitates user trading between different cryptocurrencies, effectively avoiding drastic price fluctuations.
  • Cross-border Remittances and Value Transfer: With its low fees and high efficiency, USDT has become a convenient tool for cross-border value transfer.
  • Decentralized Finance (DeFi): In various DeFi platforms, USDT is widely used for providing liquidity, lending, and earning yields.

Tether is actively expanding its cross-chain capabilities, for example, through USDT0, a multi-chain token supported by LayerZero OFT, and by establishing hubs with Legacy Hub and Plasma. Concurrently, Tether also adjusts network support based on market changes, having announced the end of support for networks such as EOS, Algorand, OmniLayer, BCH-SLP, and Kusama.

Market Position and Data Performance

USDT is currently the largest stablecoin by market capitalization and one of the most widely traded cryptocurrencies globally. As of August 11, 2026, the current price of USDT is approximately $1.00, with a market capitalization of about $183.098 billion, a circulating supply of approximately 183.2 billion USDT, and a 24-hour trading volume of approximately $30.758 billion. Historically, USDT reached its highest price of $1.29 in December 2018.

In 2025, USDT minting activity significantly increased, especially in late April and May, creating billions of USDT in a short period. This was interpreted by the market as a positive signal of new capital entering the crypto market.

Notably, Tether announced in February 2026 that it would no longer mint the CNY-pegged stablecoin CNHT and would cease providing redemption support by 2027.

Controversies and Risks

Despite USDT's dominant position in the crypto market, it is accompanied by several controversies and risks:

  • Reserve Transparency: USDT has been criticized for insufficient reserve disclosure, raising doubts about whether it is 100% backed by equivalent US dollar assets. Tether has continuously strengthened public disclosure in recent years and regularly publishes attestation reports to address these concerns.
  • Price Manipulation Allegations: Some research speculates that when Tether mints new USDT, Bitcoin prices may rise, leading to discussions about market manipulation.
  • Regulatory Risk: As a crypto asset issued by a private company, USDT's stability relies on its issuance mechanism and market trust, rather than government or central bank legal enforcement or deposit insurance. Regulatory frameworks for stablecoins are still evolving globally.
  • Distinction from Bank Dollars: USDT is not the US dollar itself, and there are fundamental differences in legal status, risk structure, and use cases compared to bank dollar deposits. Users should fully understand its characteristics as a crypto asset.

USDT's main competitor is USDC, issued by Circle, which is generally considered to have a more conservative approach to reserve structure transparency.

Acquiring and Trading USDT

As the most mainstream stablecoin on the market, USDT can be traded on platforms that support it; almost all major cryptocurrency exchanges support USDT trading pairs. Before participating in trading, users must verify the trading channels themselves and be aware of the associated risks.
