Atala PRISM: Cardano's Core Decentralized Identity Solution
Atala PRISM is a core decentralized identity solution within the Cardano ecosystem, developed by IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong), Cardano's main development company. Its core goal is to enable the secure creation, ownership, and management of digital identity, allowing users to have complete control over how their personal data is used and accessed. Atala PRISM has wide-ranging applications, covering enterprises, governments, and individuals, and can be applied in various key areas such as education, healthcare, financial services, and public services. The solution provides services through mobile applications and is developing smart cards to cover a broader user base, including those without smartphones.
Veridian Platform and Verifiable Credentials
To further promote the application of decentralized identity, the Cardano Foundation launched the Veridian platform on April 3, 2025, an open-source digital identity platform, and released its first product, Veridian Wallet. The Veridian platform aims to provide individuals and enterprises with verifiable credentials and robust data security to solve identity verification challenges in healthcare, finance, supply chain, and academia.
Global Cooperation and Application Cases
Cardano's digital identity vision has also received recognition and cooperation from international organizations. The Cardano Foundation is collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to jointly launch the 2026 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Blockchain Accelerator, with identity management as one of the key focus areas. The application period for this accelerator is from July to September 2026, aiming to promote global development through blockchain technology. In addition, the Ethiopian Ministry of Education has partnered with IOHK to address digital identity issues using Atala PRISM. The EU's "Horizon 2020" program-funded PRIViLEDGE project (June 2021) also mentioned Cardano and IOHK's participation, exploring their potential in identity verification use cases such as online voting, insurance, and university diplomas.
Cardano 2030 Strategy and Community Participation
Cardano's long-term development strategy, the Cardano 2030 strategy, explicitly embeds Decentralized Identity (DID) and Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) solutions into transactions, contracts, and governance to achieve selective privacy and compliance, and build an enterprise-grade trust layer. The community also plays an important role in this process. For example, Project Catalyst received 380,000 ADA in community funding in August 2023 to develop an SSI wallet toolkit and smart contracts, aiming to issue Cardano NFT tokens representing Distributed IDs (DiD), enabling users to confirm participation in transactions.
EMURGO and Yoroi Wallet's Identity Exploration
EMURGO, a key entity in the Cardano ecosystem, has also explored identity-related aspects through its Yoroi Wallet. Yoroi Wallet has integrated Cardano Connect (CNS), allowing users to create and manage secure social profiles through .ada domains minted as NFTs, which can be considered a form of decentralized identity.
