What Is GRT? An Introduction to The Graph Protocol
GRT (Graph Token) is the native cryptocurrency of The Graph project; it is an ERC-20 token based on the Ethereum. The Graph is a decentralized indexing protocol whose core functionality is to efficiently query and organize blockchain data. It is often likened to “Google for blockchains” and aims to address the efficiency challenges that decentralized applications (dApps) face when accessing and processing on-chain data.

Through The Graph protocol, developers can build and publish open APIs, known as “subgraphs.”These subgraphs allow users to easily query data from different blockchain networks using the GraphQL language. Currently, they support more than 70 blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, and IPFS, greatly simplifying access to and utilization of blockchain data.
The Role of GRT in The Graph Ecosystem
GRT is the core utility token of The Graph ecosystem, used to incentivize network participants and ensure data integrity and security. Its primary functions include:

- Indexers: These node operators stake GRT to run The Graph nodes, where they are responsible for indexing blockchain data and providing query services. They earn GRT rewards and query fees by providing these services.
- Curators: Curators stake GRT to identify and label high-quality, useful subgraphs. Their role is to signal to indexers which data is worth indexing, thereby helping the network allocate resources efficiently. Curators also receive a share of the query fees generated by the subgraphs they label.
- Delegators: Delegators are GRT holders who wish to participate in the network but do not want to run a node directly. They can delegate their GRT to high-performing indexers, thereby sharing in the GRT rewards earned by those indexers without having to deal with the complexities of running a node.
- Consumers: Consumers are primarily developers and dApp users who pay for query services using GRT to access blockchain data provided by The Graph network.
What was the initial price of GRT? Issuance and Funding Details
GRT was officially listed on cryptocurrency exchanges on December 17, 2020. Its initial listing price was $0.03.
Prior to its official listing, The Graph project garnered widespread support through multiple rounds of funding. As of November 2020, The Graph had raised approximately $25 million through investments from community members, strategic venture capital firms, and influential figures in the blockchain space—including well-known institutions such as Coinbase Ventures. In addition, The Graph Foundation successfully completed a public sale of GRT, attracting participants from 99 countries worldwide (excluding the United States).
