Gate.io Exchange: Operational Status
Gate.io, formerly known as "Biter," has evolved into one of the longest-operating established exchanges in the global cryptocurrency market since its establishment in 2013. As of September 2026, the platform actively operates in over 130 countries and regions worldwide, with more than 61 million registered users, offering a wide range of crypto asset trading services.

Gate.io supports trading for over 5,200 crypto assets and more than 12,800 stock assets, covering various trading types such as spot trading, futures trading, margin trading, ETFs, copy trading, and trading bots. Additionally, the platform offers diversified features including Gate Finance wealth management and lending services, Launchpad, NFT Marketplace, and Web3 Wallet. Before users can trade or deposit/withdraw funds, the platform mandates KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. For deposits and withdrawals, in addition to supporting cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals, it also provides fiat currency options like C2C (peer-to-peer) trading.
It is worth noting that Gate.io has service restrictions in certain jurisdictions. The platform does not provide services to residents of mainland China, the United States, Canada, and other regions. Furthermore, Gate.io ceased its operations in Hong Kong and withdrew its local license application in May 2024, and stopped providing services to Japanese customers in July 2024. In Taiwan, Gate.io has not yet completed its anti-money laundering compliance statement with the Financial Supervisory Commission, and therefore is not recommended by the Taiwan Virtual Asset Provider Association.

Gate.io's Security and Global Compliance Progress
Gate.io employs multi-layered security measures, including cold and hot wallet separation, multi-signature technology, TEE (Trusted Execution Environment), and MPC (Secure Multi-Party Computation), complemented by strict internal controls. For user account security, the platform mandates KYC verification and offers features such as two-factor authentication (2FA), IP monitoring, withdrawal fund passwords, anti-phishing codes, and security logs. The platform also conducts regular security audits and has obtained ISO 27001 certification, achieving an AA security rating on CER.live.

Regarding Proof of Reserves (PoR), Gate.io was one of the earliest exchanges to implement this mechanism and has upgraded to use zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge proofs) technology to enhance privacy protection and data security. According to the latest audit data from July 2026, Gate.io's reserve ratio is 115.73%, exceeding its total user deposits, and it provides monthly user balance verification. Users can check relevant market data and project information on platforms like Svmuu to assist with verification.
Gate.io is actively pursuing global compliance, striving to "exceed regulatory requirements." As of late April/May 2025, the platform has obtained 12 registrations, licenses, authorizations, or approvals in 11 jurisdictions worldwide, including Malta (with a full MiCA license applicable to the entire European Economic Area EEA), Dubai (obtained VASP license in April 2025), Australia, Bahamas, Italy, Lithuania, Gibraltar, Argentina, and Cyprus.

Market Views and Potential Risks
Despite Gate.io's extensive efforts in security and compliance, market opinions remain somewhat divided. Some views suggest that Gate.io's security is at a moderate level among mainstream exchanges, that some of the licenses it has obtained are of relatively low value, and that information on the Gate SAFU User Security Asset Fund is insufficiently updated. Furthermore, there were reports of a $234 million exploit in 2018, which Gate.io did not publicly disclose, and this remains a concern for some analysts.

User reviews of Gate.io are also polarized. Some users believe the platform offers a rich variety of cryptocurrencies, making it an ideal place to find early project opportunities; others feel there are too many altcoins, leading to relatively higher trading risks. Additionally, some users have reported issues with account freezing and slow customer service response times. For new users, it is generally recommended to prioritize mainstream exchanges and mainstream cryptocurrencies for trading, and to fully understand the associated risks.
