DRIFT Token Overview and Total Supply
DRIFT is the native governance token of Drift Protocol, a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Solana blockchain, primarily offering perpetual contract trading, while also supporting spot trading and lending services. The total supply of DRIFT tokens is fixed at 1 billion, a cap that ensures the token's scarcity. Its Token Generation Event (TGE) was completed in May 2024, marking the official issuance and circulation of the token.

Token Distribution Model and Current Circulation
The distribution of DRIFT tokens is designed to support the long-term development of the protocol and community participation, with the specific allocation plan as follows:
- Community: Accounts for 53% of the total supply, with 43% allocated for ecosystem development and trading rewards, and 10% for initial airdrop.
- Protocol Development: Accounts for 25% of the total supply, used to support the continuous development and innovation of the protocol.
- Strategic Participants (Investors): Accounts for 22% of the total supply.

Since the TGE in May 2024, DRIFT tokens will be gradually distributed according to a 5-year emission schedule. As of September 25, 2026, the circulating supply of DRIFT tokens is approximately 611.5 million. For reference, according to data from November 18, 2025, the circulating supply was 555,713,264 DRIFT, accounting for approximately 55.6% of the total supply at that time.
Recent Protocol Developments and Challenges
Drift Protocol has recently experienced a series of significant events that have impacted its operations and token circulation. In April 2026, Drift Protocol suffered a $285 million exploit. To address this challenge, the protocol underwent a comprehensive code overhaul in June 2026 and replaced its leadership team, aiming to significantly enhance protocol security.

In the recovery process, Tether proposed to provide $127.5 million in recovery funds on September 24, 2026, along with an additional $20 million from other partners, totaling nearly $150 million, aimed at compensating affected users and supporting the protocol's restart. However, on September 25, 2026, Switchboard announced the cessation of technical support for Solana oracle feeds, requiring protocols including Drift to migrate or verify their price feeds, which presented new technical migration challenges for Drift Protocol.
Uses and Governance of DRIFT Token

The DRIFT token is the core governance tool of the Drift Protocol ecosystem. Token holders can participate in key protocol decisions through the Drift DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), including but not limited to adjusting risk parameters, introducing new trading markets, and protocol upgrades. The Drift DAO adopts a multi-branch governance model, which includes the Realms DAO responsible for protocol development, the Security Council responsible for protocol upgrades and risk parameters, and the Futarchy DAO responsible for funding ecosystem projects, ensuring decentralized and specialized governance.
