Livepeer (LPT) Core Technology and Positioning
Livepeer (LPT) is a decentralized video streaming network built on the Ethereum blockchain. Its core objective is to provide scalable, cost-effective video transcoding and AI computing infrastructure, aiming to become the real-time media layer within the Web3 technology stack. By leveraging thousands of distributed processors, Livepeer offers broadcasters and developers a more economical, efficient, and secure alternative to traditional centralized solutions.

Recently, Livepeer has been increasingly shifting its focus toward decentralized, real-time AI video computing. In the first quarter of 2026, AI inference accounted for approximately 60% of the protocol’s total revenue, demonstrating its rapid growth in this emerging field. In August 2026, the Livepeer 2.0 protocol upgrade shifted the network’s unit of supply from GPU hardware to raw computing power, aiming to lower the hardware barrier for node operators, expand the pool of network participants, and enhance the network’s ability to process AI video workloads.Shortly thereafter, in September 2026, the launch of the Livepeer Agent public beta further validated real-world user demand and drove practical adoption of the network.
LPT Token Economics and Use Cases
The LPT token plays a key role in the Livepeer network, primarily used for staking and governance. LPT holders can stake their tokens to help secure the network and select the service providers (Orchestrators) they trust. In return, stakers can earn processing fees (paid in ETH and LPT) as well as a share of the inflationary supply. Additionally, LPT holders have the right to participate in governance functions—such as protocol upgrades and treasury management—to collectively determine the network’s direction.

“Orchestrators” (node operators) on the network are participants with sufficient computing power who earn fees by providing resources for video transcoding and distribution. These operators are required to stake LPT as a commitment to their reliable operation.“Delegators” stake their LPT with Orchestrators they trust, thereby sharing a portion of the fees and inflationary token issuance.
Market Performance and Historical Data
As of September 28, 2026, the market price of the LPT token was approximately $1.70, with a total market capitalization of approximately $88.5 million. Its circulating supply was approximately 49.69 million LPT.There is no hard cap on the maximum supply of Livepeer tokens. LPT’s all-time high was approximately $99.03 (reached in November 2021), while its all-time low was approximately $0.354051 (recorded on October 26, 2019).Over the past year, the price of LPT has declined by approximately 74.64%.

Although Livepeer network usage grew by 71.9% in the first quarter of 2026, average revenue per thousand minutes fell by 22% during the same period, suggesting that the network may be facing some pricing pressure or efficiency challenges.
Future Development and Challenges
Livepeer’s vision for the future, “Livepeer Cascade,” aims to build a community-driven AI video pipeline platform to further solidify its position in the real-time AI video space. The establishment of the Livepeer Foundation also provides a neutral governing body for the network’s next phase of growth, decentralization, and ecosystem participation.

However, Livepeer faces intense competition in the decentralized computing space from projects such as Render (RENDER) and Theta Network (THETA), which are also targeting the AI and GPU workload markets. Whether Livepeer can maintain a high growth rate amid this competition will be a key determinant of its future market share.
