Issuance History of MANA and the Decentraland Platform
MANA is the native cryptocurrency of Decentraland, a virtual reality platform built on the Ethereum blockchain. The token's Initial Coin Offering (ICO) was successfully conducted in August 2017, raising approximately $24 million. During the ICO, the initial price of MANA was $0.024. Subsequently, MANA tokens became transferable on September 15, 2017, allowing for trading on supported cryptocurrency exchanges. The Decentraland virtual world itself officially opened to the public on February 20, 2020, about two and a half years after the ICO's completion.

As an ERC-20 standard token, MANA initially had a total supply set at 2.8 billion. Due to burn mechanisms such as LAND auctions, over 600 million MANA have been burned. As of September 1, 2026, the circulating supply of MANA is approximately 1.96 billion to 1.99 billion, with a total supply of approximately 2.19 billion. Notably, MANA does not have a fixed maximum supply cap; its continuous issuance is managed by the Decentraland DAO, with net emissions experiencing moderate inflation through continuous issuance controlled by the DAO.
Uses and Governance of MANA in the Decentraland Ecosystem

MANA plays a central role in the Decentraland ecosystem, combining utility and governance functions:
- Purchasing Virtual Assets: Users can use MANA to purchase virtual land (LAND), in-game items, and custom avatars within Decentraland.
- Participating in Governance: MANA token holders can participate in platform governance voting by converting MANA to wMANA and locking it in the Decentraland DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). LAND holders also directly receive voting rights, collectively making decisions on platform rules, fund expenditures, and in-game policies.
Legitimacy and Regulatory Risks of MANA

The legitimacy of MANA, particularly regarding its classification as a security, faces significant regulatory uncertainty. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has repeatedly alleged in enforcement actions against cryptocurrency trading platforms that MANA constitutes a security under U.S. federal securities laws.
This regulatory stance has directly impacted MANA's market performance and trading availability:
- Crypto platform Wealthsimple once warned users that MANA carried "higher regulatory risks," noting that if a U.S. court ultimately determined MANA to be a security, the platform might cease supporting MANA, and the market could be adversely affected.
- Bitfinex stopped trading MANA and delisted it on July 16, 2025.

Investors and users engaging in MANA-related activities should fully understand and assess the potential regulatory risks and continuously monitor the latest regulatory developments in relevant jurisdictions.
Trading and Acquiring MANA

As a widely circulated crypto asset, MANA can be traded on major global cryptocurrency exchanges that support the token. Since MANA is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token, users can also connect Web3 wallets that support the ERC-20 standard to DEXs for exchange. Before trading, please verify the listing status and compliance of your chosen platform.
