Tether (USDT) Overview
Tether (USDT) is a cryptocurrency launched by Tether company in 2014, with the core goal of providing price stability to the volatile cryptocurrency market. As a stablecoin, USDT aims to maintain a 1:1 value peg with the US dollar, meaning each USDT is theoretically backed by an equivalent amount of reserve assets held by Tether. USDT plays a crucial role in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, not only providing liquidity and helping traders mitigate market volatility risks but also facilitating seamless conversion between fiat currency and digital assets.
Operational Mechanism and Blockchain Compatibility

USDT's operational mechanism is based on its reserve assets. Tether claims that every USDT token issued is 100% backed by its reserves, which primarily include US Treasury bills, cash and cash equivalents, supplemented by a small amount of Bitcoin, gold, and other assets. Tether maintains the USDT-to-USD peg through an issuance and redemption mechanism: when users deposit USD, Tether issues an equivalent amount of USDT; when users redeem USD, Tether destroys an equivalent amount of USDT.
To meet the needs of different blockchain ecosystems, USDT was initially issued on Bitcoin's Omni Layer protocol and subsequently rapidly expanded to multiple mainstream blockchain networks. Currently, USDT is widely circulated on networks such as Ethereum (ERC-20), TRON (TRC-20), Solana, and Avalanche, greatly enhancing its interoperability and ease of use across different platforms.
Transparency, Regulatory Challenges, and Business Diversification
Despite USDT's dominant position in the market, its transparency, reserve adequacy, and compliance issues have long been points of contention. Tether claims its reserves are 100% backed and regularly publishes quarterly attestation reports by international auditing firm BDO Italia to confirm the total reserves. However, these attestation reports only confirm data at specific points in time and are not full financial audit reports, thus failing to completely quell external doubts. In 2021, Tether was fined $41 million by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) over reserve transparency issues.
As the global regulatory environment becomes increasingly stringent, Tether faces new challenges. In July 2025, the US enacted the GENIUS Act, which imposes stricter regulatory requirements on stablecoins, including demanding 100% reserves in cash and short-term US Treasuries, and monthly independent audits. In response to the new regulations, Tether appointed a new CEO in August 2025 and plans to launch USAT, a stablecoin compliant with the act.

Entering 2026, Tether's compliance continues to be scrutinized. In October 2026, US Senator Richard Blumenthal requested investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald to explain its relationship with Tether and its compliance measures, following reports that wallets linked to Iran were heavily using USDT. Tether responded by stating that the company has cooperated with law enforcement for years and froze nearly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT in 2026.
In terms of business development, Tether Holdings Limited underwent a restructuring in early 2024, expanding its strategic focus from purely stablecoin operations to areas such as sustainable Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence, demonstrating its strategic direction towards diversification. Tether Limited is a subsidiary of iFinex, which is also the parent company of the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange.
Market Performance and Acquisition Methods
As of October 11, 2026, USDT's market performance is as follows:
- Current Price: Approximately $0.99905 - $0.9999
- Market Cap: Approximately $184.08 billion - $184.09 billion
- Circulating Supply: Approximately 184.25 billion - 184.3 billion USDT
- Total Supply: Approximately 189.3 billion - 189.32 billion USDT

USDT's historical price fluctuations have been relatively small but not entirely stable. Its all-time high reached $1.20 (May 2026), and its all-time low dropped to $0.91 (May 2026). In December 2025, USDT's total supply surpassed 190 billion tokens, reaching approximately 191.099 billion, highlighting its widespread adoption and demand in the market.
As one of the most liquid stablecoins globally, USDT can be traded on platforms that support it. Users can typically acquire USDT by registering an account on a cryptocurrency exchange, completing identity verification, and then purchasing USDT via bank transfer or other supported payment methods. USDT can also be exchanged on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) by connecting a Web3 wallet.
