FXS: The Governance Core of the Frax Protocol
FXS (Frax Share) was once the core governance and value accrual token of the Frax decentralized stablecoin protocol. The Frax Protocol is known for its innovative hybrid model, which combines partial collateralization and partial algorithmic mechanisms, aiming to maintain its stablecoin FRAX's stable peg to the US dollar. This unique design aims to address the limitations of traditional stablecoins and provide a highly scalable, decentralized algorithmic currency.
The FXS token played a crucial role in the Frax ecosystem. FXS holders could obtain veFXS by locking their tokens, thereby participating in the protocol's governance decisions, including adjusting collateral asset pools, setting minting/redemption fees, and updating collateral ratios, among other key parameters. Unlike FRAX, which is pegged to $1, FXS itself was designed to be volatile and carried the system's governance rights and all utility.
The Evolution of FXS and the Birth of FRAX

The Frax project has undergone significant evolution and rebranding in recent years. In 2024, the Frax project underwent a rebranding, integrating many FXS brand elements into "FRAX" to create a more concise and unified brand image. Subsequently, in late 2025, Frax announced a major plan: to rename the Frax Share (FXS) token to Frax (FRAX) at a 1:1 ratio.
This renaming officially took effect in January 2026, with FXS deposit, withdrawal, and trading services ceasing, and the new FRAX token beginning to trade on the market. Today, FRAX (formerly FXS) not only continues to serve as the Frax protocol's governance and value accrual token but has also been assigned new important responsibilities: it has become the native Gas and staking token for the Fraxtal sovereign L2 blockchain, introduced through the "North Star" hard fork, marking a new phase for the Frax ecosystem. Core Mechanisms and Value Accrual
The Frax Protocol's hybrid stablecoin model is considered innovative by the market, as it dynamically adjusts the collateral ratio to adapt to market conditions. When the FRAX price is above $1, the protocol lowers the collateral ratio, encouraging the minting of more FRAX, thereby increasing supply and lowering the price; conversely, when the FRAX price is below $1, the protocol raises the collateral ratio, encouraging the burning of FRAX to reduce supply and push up the price. The FXS token's value accrual mechanism is closely related to this, with protocol-generated fees and excess collateral value partially distributed to FXS holders.
Market Performance and Supply Overview
The initial supply of FXS was set at 100 million tokens, with a hard cap. As of October 2, 2024, the hard supply cap for FXS remains 100 million tokens. Historically, for example, as of May 11, 2022, FXS was trading at approximately $17.55, with a market capitalization of $284.9 million. It is important to note that since FXS ceased trading and was renamed FRAX in January 2026, its historical price and market capitalization data are for reference only and do not represent the current market performance of the FRAX token.
How to Acquire FRAX Tokens

Given that the FXS token has been renamed FRAX and has ceased trading, the following acquisition methods apply to the current FRAX token:
- Purchase via Centralized Exchanges (CEX): Users can register an account and complete identity verification (KYC) on cryptocurrency exchanges that support FRAX (such as OKX, KuCoin, Kraken, Binance, Bitget, etc.). Afterward, FRAX can be purchased using various fiat deposit methods, including bank transfers, credit/debit cards, and more.
- Exchange via Decentralized Exchanges (DEX): Use self-custodial Web3 wallets like MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, or Trust Wallet to connect to decentralized exchanges that support FRAX (such as Uniswap, PancakeSwap). Users can exchange other cryptocurrencies (e.g., ETH, USDT) for FRAX.
- Staking or Providing Liquidity: Stake FRAX in the Frax protocol itself or other DeFi projects, or provide FRAX and other cryptocurrencies to DEX liquidity pools to earn staking rewards or liquidity mining rewards.
Please note that the cryptocurrency market is highly volatile, and it is essential to conduct thorough research and assess risks before investing.
