What is Fantom?

Fantom is a smart contract platform designed to address the scalability, speed, and cost issues of traditional blockchains. It achieves high transaction throughput and rapid finality while maintaining network decentralization and security by employing an innovative Lachesis consensus mechanism—an asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (aBFT) protocol based on a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure. Its network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to easily deploy and run decentralized applications (dApps) using familiar tools like the Solidity language.

Core Technology and Key Developments

Fantom (FTM): Current Status of a High-Performance Smart Contract Platform and the Path to Sonic Upgrade

At Fantom's core is its unique Lachesis consensus mechanism, which achieves high performance through its "leaderless" and asynchronous characteristics, eliminating the reliance on blocks for transaction ordering. Built on this technology, the Fantom Opera mainnet launched in December 2019, becoming the primary operating platform for its ecosystem applications.

Currently, Fantom's development focus has fully shifted to its next-generation technology stack—Fantom Sonic. This upgrade, announced in October 2023, aims to boost network performance to over 10,000 transactions per second and achieve near-one-second finality. To ensure a smooth transition to the Sonic network, the official team has announced that the existing Opera mainnet will be permanently shut down on June 30, 2026, at which point FTM tokens will be migrated 1:1 to "S" tokens on the new chain.

In terms of ecosystem building, the Fantom Foundation established a partnership with Google Cloud in May 2024. Google Cloud will not only serve as a validator for the Fantom Opera network but also plans to offer its infrastructure and AI capabilities to the migrated Sonic network, incentivizing more developers to build applications on Fantom.

Ecosystem, Challenges, and Collaborations

The Fantom ecosystem spans various sectors, including Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and GameFi, and once featured a range of well-known applications such as SpookySwap and Geist Finance. The early involvement of renowned DeFi architect Andre Cronje also brought community attention to the project.

The project has also faced challenges during its development:

  • Impact of the Multichain Incident: In July 2023, the cross-chain bridge project Multichain experienced a major vulnerability, leading to the theft of assets on multiple blockchains, including Fantom. The Fantom ecosystem reportedly lost approximately one-third of its assets. The Fantom Foundation subsequently filed a lawsuit against Multichain Foundation.
  • Market Competition and Personnel Changes: Fantom has consistently faced intense competition from other high-performance blockchains. Additionally, Andre Cronje's temporary departure from the crypto industry in early 2022 also had a short-term negative impact on community sentiment and token price.

Currently, the Fantom Foundation is continuing to advance technical upgrades through its Sonic Labs brand (updated since September 2024) and supporting developers with grant programs like the Ecosystem Vault, aiming to rebuild and expand its ecosystem on the Sonic network.

About the FTM Token

FTM is the native utility token of the Fantom network, used for paying transaction fees, participating in staking (as a validator/delegator), and network governance.

According to public information, the total supply of FTM is approximately 3.175 billion tokens, with a circulating supply of about 2.8 billion as of early October 2026. Its all-time high price occurred in October 2021, reaching approximately $3.46, while as of early October 2026, its price fluctuates in the $0.04 range. Users can trade FTM on supported exchanges.

Summary

Fantom is a high-performance smart contract platform whose technical roadmap has undergone significant evolution over the past few years, from the Opera mainnet to the new Sonic network. With the planned shutdown of the Opera network and the full migration to Sonic, the project is at a critical technical transition point. Its future development will highly depend on whether the Sonic upgrade successfully delivers on its performance promises and whether the ecosystem can effectively attract developers and users to rebuild prosperity on the new network.
