Aave (AAVE) is the native governance token of the decentralized lending protocol Aave. As one of the core assets in the DeFi sector, its supply structure is clear and fully transparent.
AAVE Issuance and Supply Mechanism
The total supply (i.e., maximum supply) of AAVE is fixed at 16,000,000 tokens. This supply was not generated through traditional mining but originated from a token migration.
In July 2020, the Aave protocol conducted a token swap, converting LEND tokens from its previous project (formerly known as ETHLend) at a ratio of 1 new AAVE for 100 old LEND. Through this migration, a total of 1.3 billion LEND were converted into 13 million AAVE. Concurrently, the protocol minted an additional 3 million AAVE as an ecosystem reserve, collectively forming the fixed total supply of 16 million tokens.

Current State of AAVE Circulating Supply
AAVE has a very high circulating supply. According to recent public data (October 2026), its circulating supply is approximately 15,436,000 tokens, accounting for over 96% of the total supply. This means that the vast majority of AAVE tokens are already in circulation.
The main reason for the continuous slow growth in circulating supply is the planned gradual release of tokens from the ecosystem reserve, used for protocol development, incentives, and the safety module, among other purposes. However, overall, due to the fixed total supply and most tokens already being in circulation, AAVE's inflation pressure is extremely low.
Uses and Economic Model of AAVE Token
AAVE is not only a governance token but also deeply involved in the protocol's security and economic operations:
- Governance: Holders can propose or vote on governance proposals, determining key protocol parameters, upgrades, and fund usage.
- Safety Module Staking: Users can stake AAVE into the protocol's Safety Module, providing a security backup for the system and acting as a last line of defense in the event of a shortfall. Stakers receive additional AAVE as rewards.
- Fee Discounts: Using AAVE to pay lending fees within the protocol offers certain discounts.
Furthermore, the Aave DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) implemented an annual budget of $50 million for a buyback program starting in April 2025, utilizing protocol revenue to purchase AAVE tokens in the open market. In 2026, the founder presented a vision for evolving towards a more automated on-chain buyback mechanism (Aavenomics 3.0).
Recent Protocol Developments

The Aave protocol continues to iterate, with its V4 version deployed on multiple blockchains including Ethereum, Avalanche, and Circle Arc, introducing a unified liquidity architecture. Recently, the protocol has also expanded its product line, for example, launching Stable Vaults that provide yield for fintech applications, and supporting Coinbase's tokenized stocks as collateral for lending.
AAVE can be traded on mainstream cryptocurrency exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, KuCoin, Bybit, and Gate.
