What is NXT?
NXT is an early project in the cryptocurrency space, launched in 2013 by anonymous developer BCNext. Its core innovation was being the first blockchain platform built entirely on the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, rather than the Proof-of-Work used by Bitcoin. Written from scratch in Java, NXT aimed to provide a wide range of functionalities beyond simple payments, such as asset exchange, voting systems, and data storage, thus often considered a pioneer of "Blockchain 2.0."
Key Features and History
NXT has a total supply of 1 billion tokens, all of which were fully distributed after its initial public offering in 2013, with no mining mechanism. The network generates new blocks through "forging," and forgers receive transaction fees as rewards.

Throughout its development, NXT achieved significant market standing. For example, in December 2017, its market capitalization briefly exceeded $1 billion, ranking 29th among all cryptocurrencies at the time. The project also fostered an active community around it and spawned several subsequent projects, including Ardor.
Latest Developments: Migration to Ardor Child Chain
Due to issues such as declining network popularity, insufficient liquidity, and a reduction in node operators, NXT's managing company, Jelurida, proposed a migration plan in October 2025. According to this plan:
- Mainnet Halt: On January 17, 2026, the NXT mainnet stopped generating new blocks and transactions after reaching its 6 millionth block.
- Child Chain Activation: On February 1, 2026, NXT was officially activated as a child chain on the Ardor platform. All NXT account balances have been automatically migrated to the Ardor ecosystem.
This migration aims to allow NXT to leverage the security and richer functionalities of the Ardor platform, offering new possibilities for holders. NXT's software and source code are currently still available under the Jelurida Public License.
Current Market Status

Following the migration, NXT's trading market has nearly dried up. According to recent data, its 24-hour trading volume is zero or negligible, with a market capitalization in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, indicating extremely low liquidity. This suggests that the token no longer has an active trading market.
Users interested in the Ardor ecosystem can follow the future developments of the Ardor platform and its native token, ARDR.
