The Origin and Vision of TRON
TRON and its native token TRX were founded by Chinese entrepreneur Justin Sun in 2017, with the TRON Foundation established in Singapore in July of the same year. TRON's initial vision was to build a decentralized internet entertainment ecosystem based on blockchain technology. This system aimed to empower users with the freedom to publish, store, and own data, and collectively determine content distribution, subscription, and push models through the issuance, circulation, and trading of digital assets.
Mainnet Migration and Ecosystem Expansion
TRX was initially issued as an ERC-20 token based on the Ethereum blockchain. As the project developed, TRON launched its testnet in March 2018, and officially launched its mainnet, "Odyssey 2.0," on May 31 of the same year. In June 2018, TRON completed its protocol migration, switching the TRX token from the Ethereum network to the independent TRON mainnet, adopting the TRC-20 standard. This migration marked the independent operation of the TRON ecosystem. In July of the same year, the TRON Foundation announced the acquisition of the well-known peer-to-peer file-sharing service BitTorrent, further expanding its ecosystem.
Decentralized Governance and Global Influence
In December 2021, the TRON network achieved full decentralization and transitioned into a community-governed Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). This move aimed to enhance network transparency and community participation. In October 2022, TRON reached a significant milestone, being designated as the national blockchain by the Commonwealth of Dominica, with TRX and six other TRON ecosystem tokens gaining legal digital currency and medium of exchange status in the country.
The TRON network has evolved into one of the world's important stablecoin circulation networks. Notably, the issuance of TRC20-USDT surpassed ERC20-USDT on Ethereum in April 2021, making it the largest USDT circulation network globally. As of May 13, 2026, Tether had issued $88.4 billion in USDT on TRON, second only to Ethereum. Furthermore, TRON has a presence in the AI sector; on April 15, 2026, the AI Agent infrastructure B.AI officially launched on the TRON network, extending TRON's AI infrastructure to Agent payment, settlement, identity, and collaboration scenarios.
TRX Tokenomics and Network Performance

The initial coin offering (ICO) for TRX took place between August and September 2017, raising approximately $70 million, with an ICO price of about $0.0019/TRX, selling a total of 40 billion TRX. TRON's initial issuance was 100 billion TRX, and the current maximum supply is 100,850,743,812 TRX. As of October 18, 2026, the circulating supply is approximately 95 billion TRX, with a current price of about $0.33, and a market capitalization between $31.64 billion and $31.815 billion, ranking among the top 10-15 cryptocurrencies by market cap. TRX's all-time high price reached $0.431288 (December 3, 2024), and its all-time low was $0.001804 (November 11, 2017).
In the DeFi sector, the TRON network's Total Value Locked (TVL) has shown outstanding performance, exceeding $27 billion as of October 2025. The TRON network is known for its high performance, with transaction speeds reaching up to 2,000 TPS, and extremely low transaction fees. Users typically obtain "bandwidth points" and "energy" by freezing TRX to offset transaction fees.
Controversies and Challenges
Despite its significant development, TRON has faced numerous controversies and challenges:
- Whitepaper Plagiarism Allegations: TRON's whitepaper was accused of plagiarizing IPFS and Filecoin documentation without attribution, and some of its code was also questioned for being copied from other projects, raising concerns about its originality.
- Degree of Decentralization: The degree of decentralization under TRON's Super Representative system has been questioned, with some arguing that governance power might be concentrated among large token holders. For example, in 2024, TRON removed Bitcoin assets from the USDD reserve without a DAO vote, raising concerns about governance transparency.
- Regulatory Pressure: Justin Sun and TRON have faced lawsuits from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), alleging illegal securities sales, fraud, and market manipulation, among other charges.
- Association with Illicit Activities: In 2024, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime stated that the TRON network was "the preferred choice for cryptocurrency money launderers" in Asia, and The Wall Street Journal also pointed out that TRON is a "popular channel for crypto criminals to move funds." In response, TRON, Tether, and TRM Labs announced in September 2024 the formation of the T3 Financial Crimes Unit to combat illicit activities.
- Security Issues: In May 2019, cybersecurity testing service HackerOne disclosed that a single computer could potentially bring down the entire TRON blockchain through a series of requests, executing a DDoS attack.
Despite these controversies, TRON, with its high performance, low fees, and good scalability, continues to attract a large number of developers and users, maintaining an important position among global public chains, especially playing a crucial role in the stablecoin and payment sectors.
