YAM (YAM) is the native token of the YAM Finance protocol. This protocol is a decentralized finance (DeFi) project whose core mechanism attempts to stabilize the price of YAM around $1 through daily automatic adjustments to the token supply (known as "rebase"). However, since its inception, YAM's development has been fraught with challenges, serving as a cautionary tale in the early DeFi space.

What is YAM?

YAM Finance launched in the summer of 2020, aiming to create a community-owned and governed "elastic supply stablecoin." Its design philosophy is: when YAM's market price is above $1, the system automatically mints new tokens and distributes them to holders to increase supply and push down the price; when the price is below $1, a portion of tokens is proportionally burned to reduce supply and support the price.

At the project's launch, the team did not pre-allocate any tokens; all YAMs were distributed to early participants through liquidity mining. Its code integrated elements from several prominent DeFi projects at the time.

A Tumultuous Development History

YAM's initial development was not smooth:

  • Initial Launch and Vulnerability: Just one day after its initial launch in 2020, the project team discovered a critical smart contract vulnerability that led to a portion of funds being permanently locked in the protocol.
  • Version Restart: To address the crisis, the community first launched YAMv2, a temporary governance token with disabled rebase functionality, used to redeem locked assets. Subsequently, the fully audited YAMv3 version officially launched on September 18, 2020, reintroducing the rebase mechanism.

Despite the restart, YAM has consistently faced significant challenges in maintaining its $1 price peg target, with its price long deviating from the target value.

Project Status and Data

According to recent data, the price of YAMv3 tokens is significantly below its design target. In DeFiLlama's statistics, YAM Finance is categorized as a synthetic asset protocol, but its Total Value Locked (TVL) has substantially decreased from its all-time high of approximately $6.76 million in April 2021.

The project is governed by the community holding YAM tokens through on-chain voting, with key decisions including the use of the treasury and the future direction of the protocol.

Trading and Market Information

YAMv3 tokens primarily operate on the Ethereum blockchain. Due to its relatively low market capitalization and trading activity, liquidity is concentrated on a few decentralized exchanges (DEXs). For interested traders, it is possible to trade on platforms that support the token, but it is crucial to verify the liquidity and listing status of relevant trading pairs before trading.

It is important to emphasize that YAM, as an experimental protocol that has historically faced significant technical risks and whose price stability has not met expectations, carries high investment risk. Before participating, one should have a thorough understanding of its mechanisms and history.
