About DIEM
Diem, originally known as Libra, was a permissioned blockchain-based stablecoin project initiated by Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook). The project aimed to create a global, simple financial infrastructure that could empower billions of people. Its vision was to provide a stable digital currency built on a secure and scalable blockchain, backed by a reserve of real assets.
The Diem network was designed with a focus on stability, low transaction fees, and high throughput. It utilized a Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus mechanism, specifically a variant called HotStuff, to ensure network security and efficiency. The project also featured the Move programming language, specifically designed for safe and secure asset management on the blockchain, allowing for the creation of smart contracts and custom transaction logic.
Initially, Diem intended to support a basket of fiat currencies and government securities to maintain its value stability. The Diem Association, an independent organization comprising various companies and non-profits, was established to govern the network and its reserve. The goal was to enable a wide range of financial services, including remittances, payments, and micro-lending, particularly targeting underserved populations globally.
Despite its ambitious goals and significant backing, the Diem project faced considerable regulatory scrutiny and pushback from global financial authorities. These challenges ultimately led to the scaling down and eventual sale of its technology assets, preventing it from achieving its full vision as a widely adopted global stablecoin.
