Latvian police are investigating the damage to a Baltic Sea telecommunications cable and have boarded a vessel for inspection. In a statement, the Latvian State Police said that a submarine telecommunications cable was damaged in the Baltic Sea last Friday, and on Sunday, Latvian investigators boarded a vessel linked to the incident to conduct an inspection. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, the Baltic region has experienced a series of disruptions to power cables, telecommunications lines, and natural gas pipelines, and the region is currently on high alert. The NATO military alliance has strengthened its presence in the region by increasing the deployment of frigates, aircraft, and maritime drones. Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center stated that the cable runs from Šventoji in Lithuania to Liepāja in Latvia—two coastal towns approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) apart—and the cause of the incident remains unclear. Latvian police stated on X: “At this time, neither the vessel nor its crew has been detained; they are cooperating with police, and an active investigation is underway to clarify the situation.”
