On January 5, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked a question regarding the sudden developments in the situation in Venezuela. In response, Lin Jian stated that China has already made its position clear regarding the U.S. forcible detention of Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife, and that China expresses grave concern over the U.S. forcible detention and removal of President Maduro and his wife from the country. The U.S. actions clearly violate international law and the basic norms of international relations, as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China calls on the U.S. to ensure the personal safety of President Maduro and his wife, immediately release them, cease attempts to overthrow the Venezuelan government, and resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiations.
