On the morning of January 5, local time, the UN Security Council held an emergency open meeting on the situation in Venezuela. Ambassador Sun Lei, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered a statement at the meeting, pointing out that, As a permanent member of the Security Council, the United States has disregarded the grave concerns of the international community and flagrantly trampled upon Venezuela’s sovereignty, security, and legitimate rights and interests, thereby seriously violating the principle of sovereign equality, the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, the principle of the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and the principle of refraining from the use of force in international relations. These principles are the fundamental tenets of the United Nations Charter and constitute the cornerstone of maintaining international peace and security. By placing its own power above multilateralism and military action above diplomatic efforts, the U.S. poses a serious threat to peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as internationally.
