U.S. Attorney General Bondy stated: “Today, the United States executed a seizure order against the crude oil tanker ‘BELLA 1.’ The vessel was responsible for transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran. The ‘BELLA 1’ had previously been designated by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Because the vessel failed to comply with orders from the Coast Guard, all personnel on board are under full investigation, and all responsible parties will face criminal charges. The Department of Justice is monitoring several other vessels with a view to taking similar enforcement actions—any personnel on board any vessel who fail to comply with orders from the Coast Guard or other federal officials will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
