CME Launches 24/7 Crypto Futures Trading

CME Group officially launched its 7x24-hour trading service for cryptocurrency futures and options on May 29, 2026, following the initial announcement of the plan on February 19, 2026. This move aims to bridge the gap between traditional regulated financial markets and the always-on nature of crypto assets, providing institutional clients with more flexible risk management and trading opportunities.

Trading Mechanism and Product Scope

CME's 24/7 cryptocurrency futures and options trading is conducted via its CME Globex platform. Despite being continuous trading, there are fixed maintenance windows:

  • Weekly Maintenance: Trading pauses from 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM Central Time (CT) on Saturdays.
  • Daily Maintenance: A two-minute maintenance window occurs from 4:00 PM to 4:02 PM CT, Monday through Friday.

Regarding clearing and settlement, all holiday or weekend trades from Friday evening through Sunday evening will have their trade date counted as the next business day, with clearing, settlement, and regulatory reporting also processed on the next business day.

Currently, all CME cryptocurrency futures and options contracts (excluding spot-quoted futures) are included in the 24/7 trading scope. Prior to this 24/7 launch, CME Bitcoin and Ethereum futures traded from Sunday to Friday, 5 PM CT to 4 PM CT the following day, with a 60-minute daily trading halt.

CME and Market Participant Perspectives

Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equity, FX, and Alternative Products at CME Group, stated that client demand for digital asset market risk management reached an all-time high, driving a record $3 trillion in nominal trading volume in 2025. He emphasized that providing 24/7 access to regulated, transparent crypto products aims to ensure clients can manage risk and trade at any time, bridging the gap between traditional regulated venues and the 24/7 nature of crypto assets, and offering continuous price discovery and trading confidence.

Market participants have also welcomed this development. JB Mackenzie, Vice President and General Manager of Futures and International at Robinhood Markets, noted that this is the first time users can trade regulated futures contracts around the clock, effectively bridging the weekend gap between traditional derivatives and spot markets. Noel Kimmel, President of Ripple Prime, stated that Ripple Prime is designed for 24/7 markets and supports CME Group's 24/7 cryptocurrency futures and options trading. Bob Fitzsimmons, Executive Vice President at Wedbush Securities Inc., also mentioned that Wedbush has actively provided 24/7 services to clients for over a year.

Sylvain Thieullent, CEO of Horizon Trading Solutions, believes that CME Group's shift to 24/7 trading is a significant turning point in global market structure. He pointed out that while spot crypto markets are familiar with 24/7 trading, introducing it to traditional exchange-traded markets presents different operational and technical challenges, as many financial institutions still rely on overnight downtime for trade reconciliation, risk model refreshes, margin processing, and infrastructure maintenance. A truly 24/7 trading environment will revolutionize this dynamic.
