Supreme People's Court: Future efforts will focus on cracking down on related crimes such as money laundering involving virtual currencies and underground money transfer operations
Svmuu News: Wang Bin, Director of the Third Criminal Division of the Supreme People’s Court, stated at a press conference held by the Supreme People’s Court on February 26 regarding “the People’s Courts’ efforts to punish telecommunications and internet fraud and property crimes in accordance with the law” that, moving forward, the courts will focus their crackdown on the ringleaders and key members of criminal groups, the “financiers” of telecom fraud, “snakeheads” organizing illegal border crossings, and organizations providing armed shelter for cross-border telecom fraud crimes, as well as associated crimes such as intentional homicide, intentional injury, kidnapping, and other violent crimes committed during the course of telecom fraud, and “money laundering” involving virtual currencies and underground money transfer networks. Wang Bin also stated that the People’s Courts will, in accordance with the law, intensify the application of property penalties against telecommunications fraud criminals to ensure they do not profit financially. The courts will guide individuals involved in “two-card” assistance, and those who conceal criminal activities to voluntarily compensate victims. The courts will consider the return of ill-gotten gains and compensation as mitigating factors in sentencing, such as evidence of repentance and eligibility for leniency. Criminals who have the means but refuse to return ill-gotten gains or provide compensation will be severely punished in accordance with the law.
