Anthropic CEO Resumes Negotiations on AI Contract with the U.S. Department of Defense
Svmuu News: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is currently in talks with Emil Michael, the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, in an effort to reach a compromise on the terms of a contract for the Pentagon’s use of Anthropic’s AI models. Negotiations between the two sides broke down last week. In an internal memo, Amodei stated that toward the end of the talks, the Department of Defense proposed removing a clause regarding “bulk data analysis” from the contract—a provision that serves as Anthropic’s core safeguard against the AI being used for large-scale domestic surveillance. Anthropic’s red lines include prohibiting the use of AI for large-scale domestic surveillance and lethal autonomous weapons. In the memo, Amodei also claimed that certain statements from the Pentagon and OpenAI contained misinformation, and suggested that Anthropic was being sidelined because it had not praised Trump. Previously, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had threatened to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a move that would force companies in the military supply chain to sever ties with Anthropic. Anthropic secured a $200 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense last July, making it the first AI model to be deployed in classified environments and national security agencies. (FT)
